{"id":1028,"date":"2011-11-07T16:54:39","date_gmt":"2011-11-07T16:54:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/butcherbaker.net\/wordpress\/?p=1028"},"modified":"2020-09-28T16:59:51","modified_gmt":"2020-09-28T16:59:51","slug":"parry-thrust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lelandhale.com\/butcherbaker\/wordpress\/2011\/11\/07\/parry-thrust\/","title":{"rendered":"Parry &amp; Thrust"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We didn&#8217;t think Barnes &amp; Noble were idly sitting by while Amazon jumped the spotlight with its new <a title=\"Kindle Fire tablet\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Kindle-Fire-Amazon-Tablet\/dp\/B0051VVOB2\/ref=amb_link_357575542_7?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&amp;pf_rd_s=gateway-center-column&amp;pf_rd_r=1HF121BXWX6W1MDRJQSB&amp;pf_rd_t=101&amp;pf_rd_p=1328879142&amp;pf_rd_i=507846\">Kindle Fire<\/a> tablet. After all, June of this year saw <a title=\"Nook vs Kindle\" href=\"http:\/\/moconews.net\/article\/419-idc-nook-color-leading-e-reader-sales-for-first-time-ever-as-tablets-la\/\">Nook sales (reputedly) overtake Kindle<\/a> for the first time. [I say reputedly because neither company announces actual sales figures.] The lack of a Kindle color-screen device was the reported reason; the Kindle Fire convincingly addresses that hole in Amazon&#8217;s lineup.<\/p>\n<p>Today, B&amp;N announced an updated lineup of Nooks (<a title=\"Tablet Compare\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2011\/11\/7\/2544177\/nook-tablet-vs-kindle-fire-vs-ipad-2-tablet-comparison\">compare<\/a>). They took a jab at the competition in the process. The big news is a <a title=\"Nook Tablet\" href=\"http:\/\/live.theverge.com\/Event\/Barnes__Noble_Nook_Tablet_event_live_blog\">Nook Tablet<\/a> for $249 ($50 premium over the competing Fire). Among the advantages B&amp;N touts over its rival are availability through retail partners (Best Buy, Target, Walmart) <em>and<\/em> in-store support. They&#8217;re clearly taking a page from the <a title=\"Apple Retail Store\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/retail\/storelist\/\">Apple Retail Store<\/a> playbook here [1]:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>None of Apple\u2019s rival companies have any sort of physical real-world relationship with customers like Apple does. Google, Amazon, Samsung, HTC, Dell \u2014 we interact with these companies only via our screens, or in generic big-box retail stores like Best Buy. Microsoft is flailing in its attempts to mimic Apple\u2019s retail effort, but they at least seem to recognize that Apple is using its retail stores to build a tangible emotional relationship with millions and millions of people. [<a title=\"The Stores\" href=\"http:\/\/daringfireball.net\/2011\/10\/thoughts_and_observations_iphone_4s\">Full citation; some scrolling required<\/a>]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>B&amp;N also emphasized that its low-end model, the <a title=\"Nook Simple Touch\" href=\"http:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/u\/nook\/379003208\">Nook Simple Touch<\/a>, is available at a lower price <em>without<\/em> ads. They&#8217;re not neglecting entry-level devices. And, of course, they&#8217;re taking another not-so-subtle jab at the competition.<\/p>\n<p>For my money, this &#8220;low-end&#8221; competition between Amazon and B&amp;N is the most compelling at the moment. While companies like <a title=\"HTC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.htc.com\/us\/#\/?slide=1\">HTC<\/a> announce <a title=\"HTC to launch new tablet next year\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2011\/11\/7\/2543818\/htc-to-launch-a-new-tablet-model-next-year-try-to-avoid-me-too-status\">new (vaporware) tablets<\/a> that aim to avoid the &#8220;me-too&#8221; syndrome, Amazon and B&amp;N actually deliver on that promise. It&#8217;s gonna be one <em>hella<\/em> <a title=\"Sarah Rotman Forrester\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.forrester.com\/sarah_rotman_epps\/11-11-07-with_barnes_nobles_nook_tablet_david_takes_on_two_goliaths\">holiday sales season<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>[1] <em>B&amp;N has a ways to go with its in-store presence; the Nook is almost an afterthought in many B&amp;N locations and will likely fare worse at its retail partners.
