What troopers knew as they took Robert Hansen in for interrogation was that stray brass had been found at gravesites on the Knik River, gravesites where the remains of missing dancers were found. The also knew that the brass was from a very specific group of firearms \u2014 ones like AR-15\u2019s<\/a> and Mini-14\u2019s<\/a> \u2014 that fired .223 caliber rounds<\/a>. Troopers wanted to know more about Hansen\u2019s weapons and where he\u2019d fired them. If they could get him to place himself and his .223 on the Knik, they were one step closer to putting him away.<\/p>\n

Bob, in his peculiar, half-bragging, half-dissembling style, led them down a garden path of meaningless evasions. One thing was certain: he fancied himself quite the expert with his .223. It was, it seemed, a natural extension of himself, his own, personal mini-me.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnder questioning Hansen said he had been up on the Knik that fall, duck hunting with his son. He also said he\u2019d been there during the summer. Where had he fired his .223 during that time? Flothe asked. On a map, Hansen pointed to a big, flat territory to the west of the old Knik River bridge.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s some islands here,\u201d he said, pointing to the same spot. \u201cGreen islands in through here. I\u2019ve gone on the banks there and shot into those banks along here many, many times. At some spots up there I\u2019ve gone and put stuff in the river, you know, and flown over and tried to shoot at them to practice for wolf hunting\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, you\u2019ve shot from the air?\u201d Flothe asked, only half believing.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve shot from the air,\u201d Flothe said again, sardonically. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize you\u2019ve done that. I have a more specific map of this area here. Hold it down. This is an aerial photograph. There\u2019s a bunch of little numbers on here and I can\u2014I can explain some things to you afterwards, but let\u2019s do this in relation to the map you have in your hand now. Can you help me out?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBy number three here?\u201d Hansen said, pointing to the aerial map. \u201cI\u2019ve shot along these banks in here many times, because it\u2019s a good place to shoot, because you\u2019ve got some good flat banks in here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUh huh,\u201d Flothe acknowledged.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can throw balloons in the water and when you shoot, you can see where your bullets are striking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is from the aircraft flying over?\u201d Flothe asked, still dubious.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. In the wintertime, I shoot wolves an awful lot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDescribe your .223 to me,\u201d Flothe said suddenly. \u201cI am not over at the house now. Describe it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust a normal .223. The old\u2014there\u2019s only one model that I know of.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, there\u2019s quite a few different models. There\u2019s, you know, there\u2019s M-16\u2019s, which are fully automatic,\u201d Flothe pointed out. \u201cThere\u2019s AR-15\u2019s\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMini-14\u2019s\u2026\u201d Galyan added.<\/p>\n

\u201c14,\u201d Hansen responded, indicating that was the model he was familiar with.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, the Mini-14. And this is the one you\u2019re talking about?\u201d Flothe asked. \u201cYou practiced dry runs, like shooting wolves, is that what you\u2019re talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason I\u2019m practicing here is to shoot wolves.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you\u2019ve hunted in that area?\u201d Flothe asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, yes. Here. You can see this-here river here, how flat it is. We put balloons out there. If you hit one, of course, it bursts. If not, you can see.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both Flothe and Galyan had trouble suppressing their skepticism. Here was a man accused of murder, a man who now had to suspect that his shell casings were on the Knik, and he was trying to wriggle out of it by suggesting that he\u2019d been up there shooting at balloons while flying a plane.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
