{"id":1256,"date":"2011-11-11T17:08:20","date_gmt":"2011-11-11T17:08:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/butcherbaker.net\/wordpress\/?p=1256"},"modified":"2020-09-28T17:01:53","modified_gmt":"2020-09-28T17:01:53","slug":"justice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lelandhale.com\/butcherbaker\/wordpress\/2011\/11\/11\/justice\/","title":{"rendered":"Justice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty.)<\/p>\n<p>Having been in situations where child sexual predators were present &#8212; including my Boy Scout Troop &#8212; I know a little bit about what&#8217;s happened in the <a title=\"Jerry Sandusky\" href=\"http:\/\/www.collegian.psu.edu\/archive\/2011\/11\/04\/former_football_coach_charged_in_sex_abuse_case.aspx\">Jerry Sandusky<\/a> case. The wall of silence that kids maintain against adults. The sly protections enacted at the kid level. (&#8220;Don&#8217;t ride with him. He&#8217;ll try to cop a feel.&#8221;) The downstream impacts (one of my scoutmaster&#8217;s victims later faced criminal charges for similar acts against school children). Although I was never a victim, I felt the effects.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, of course, what is most important is that justice be served. And part of me is wondering whether Pennsylvania authorities are still asleep at the wheel. Specifically, I hope someone is keeping a close eye on Mr. Sandusky. Let&#8217;s look at the troubling evidence:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When Sandusky was investigated in 1998 (<a title=\"Sandusky indictment\" href=\"http:\/\/www.freep.com\/assets\/freep\/pdf\/C4181508116.PDF\">Victim 6<\/a>), and confronted by the victim&#8217;s mother, he was quoted as saying: &#8220;I was wrong. I wish I could get forgiveness. I know I won&#8217;t get it from you. I wish I were dead.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>At Sandusky&#8217;s <a title=\"Arraignment\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/midstate\/index.ssf\/2011\/11\/sandusky_could_face_life_in_pr.html\">arraignment<\/a>, he was ordered to have no contact with children. A custody dispute between one of Sandusky&#8217;s sons and his wife subsequently spilled over into a temporary order\u00a0<a title=\"Grandchildren barred\" href=\"http:\/\/www.centredaily.com\/2011\/11\/08\/2979216\/court-sandusky-cant-be-alone-with.html\">barring Sandusky<\/a> from being alone with his three grandchildren, who are also <a title=\"part of custody dispute\" href=\"http:\/\/www.collegian.psu.edu\/archive\/2011\/11\/10\/Sandusky_and_his_grandchildren.aspx\">banned from overnight visits<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"shaky\" href=\"http:\/\/hosted2.ap.org\/APDEFAULT\/3d281c11a96b4ad082fe88aa0db04305\/Article_2011-11-07-Penn%20State%20Ex-Coach-Allegations\/id-72e816ce42644e75b9a012784db9b1b6\">After the arraignment<\/a>, Sandusky&#8217;s attorney reported the following: &#8220;&#8221;He&#8217;s shaky, as you can expect,&#8221; Joe Amendola told WJAC-TV after Sandusky was arraigned. &#8220;Being 67 years old, never having faced criminal charges in his life and having the distinguished career that he&#8217;s had, these are very serious allegations.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>More <a title=\"Sandusky distraught\" href=\"http:\/\/www.centredaily.com\/2011\/11\/09\/2980355\/sandusky-distraught-over-paterno.html\">recent reports<\/a> suggest that Sandusky is also &#8220;distraught&#8221; over Joe Paterno&#8217;s forced retirement and other developments at Penn State. &#8220;He feels absolutely awful,&#8221; Amendola said. &#8220;They&#8217;re taking down an entire athletic department.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>If convicted of the charges filed against him, Sandusky could face <a title=\"Life in prison\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/midstate\/index.ssf\/2011\/11\/sandusky_could_face_life_in_pr.html\">life in prison<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hello, Pennsylvania. Jerry Sandusky&#8217;s world is slowly but surely falling apart [1]. As the world closes in on him, he may be at risk. To himself.<\/p>\n<p>Given this background, it is worth noting what transpired when <a title=\"Sandusky arraigned\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/midstate\/index.ssf\/2011\/11\/sandusky_could_face_life_in_pr.html\">Jerry Sandusky was arraigned<\/a>. The state Attorney General requested $500,000 bail and an electronic leg monitor. They were clearly worried about Mr. Sandusky. District Judge Leslie Dutchcot instead ordered Sandusky freed on $100,000 unstructured bail, which means he doesn&#8217;t have to post any money unless he fails to show up in court. Given the gravity of the charges, this is tantamount to another free pass, although Sandusky&#8217;s attorney <a title=\"Sandusky not flight risk, no new allegations attorney asserts\" href=\"http:\/\/www.centredaily.com\/2011\/11\/06\/2976053\/sandusky-arrested.html\">successfully argued<\/a> otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Mr. Amendola is right. Maybe Jerry Sandusky is no threat to anyone, including himself. I hope so. Because justice requires that Sandusky face the charges against him.<br \/>\n[1] <em>I say slowly because it took almost three years for the Grand Jury to bring back an indictment.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty.)
