If you can&#8217;t lick &#8217;em, join &#8217;em?<br \/>\nWe all sense how media scrutiny has changed the way crimes and other misdeeds are reported and perceived. Herman Cain, faced with allegations of sexual harassment, fights back with charges the news media is trying him in the <a title=\"court of public opinion\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/fighting-harassment-allegations-cain-seeks-advantage-in-media-attention-he-says-he-deplores\/2011\/11\/12\/gIQAtDHLEN_story.html?tid=pm_national_pop\">court of public opinion<\/a>. Perhaps he&#8217;s taking a <a title=\"Newt on news media\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sacbee.com\/capitolalertlatest\/2011\/09\/newt-gingrich-blasts-media-dod.html\">page<\/a> or <a title=\"Newt blasts media (again)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/1111\/68012.html\">two<\/a> out of the Newt Gingrich playbook. Make the news media the fall guy, the bad boy, the source of all evil. Never mind that the allegations are based on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/1011\/67194.html\" title=\"Politico investigation\">records and settlements<\/a> that diligent reporters were able to unearth from their vault of secrecy.<br \/>\nAnd now we&#8217;re seeing a full court media press from the Jerry Sandusky defense. They&#8217;re going straight to the same news media who have apparently been pillorying them unfairly. Never mind the almost three years of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.attorneygeneral.gov\/uploadedFiles\/Press\/Sandusky-Grand-Jury-Presentment.pdf\" title=\"Pennsylvania grand jury presentment\">grand jury testimony<\/a> and the growing roll-call of alleged victims. Here&#8217;s some samples of their media counter-attack:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Joe Amendola, Jerry Sandusky&#8217;s attorney, says <a title=\"Sandusky attorney\" href=\"http:\/\/today.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/45302183\/ns\/today-today_people\/#.TsKCfWD2w70\">showering with kids<\/a> doesn&#8217;t make Sandusky guilty. Amendola also implies that <a title=\"McQueary a liar\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2011\/11\/15\/jerry-sandusky-lawyer-mcqueary-liar\/#.TsKCvGD2w70\">Mike McQueary<\/a> is a liar. Of course, as a witness, Mike McQueary cannot say anything in his own defense.<\/li>\n<li>The attorney says he thinks they&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/content.usatoday.com\/communities\/ondeadline\/post\/2011\/11\/jerry-sandusky-attorney-questions-victims-testimony-penn-state\/1\" title=\"Attorney claims Sandusky victim found\">found the alleged victim<\/a> in the McQueary incident and that he will vindicate Mr. Sandusky. Which victim? The New York times reports that<a title=\"10 new victims\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/11\/15\/sports\/ncaafootball\/jack-raykovitz-chief-of-second-mile-resigns-amid-penn-state-scandal.html\"> close to 10<\/a> <em>new<\/em> victims have now come forward. <\/li>\n<li>Sandusky himself has gotten into the act. In an &#8220;exclusive&#8221; interview, <a title=\"Sandusky to Costas\" href=\"http:\/\/rockcenter.msnbc.msn.com\/_news\/2011\/11\/14\/8804779-jerry-sandusky-to-bob-costas-in-exclusive-rock-center-interview-i-shouldnt-have-showered-with-those-kids\">Sandusky tells Bob Costas<\/a>: I shouldn&#8217;t have showered with those kids.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Dr. Conrad Murray <a title=\"Conrad Murray documentary\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/live-feed\/conrad-murray-documentary-gives-msnbc-261225\">documentary<\/a> has aired on MSNBC, much to the chagrin of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2011\/11\/09\/us-conradmurray-interview-idUSTRE7A862120111109\" title=\"Jackson family slams Conrad Murray documentary\">Michael Jackson&#8217;s family<\/a>.<br \/>\nWhat are we to make of this media counter-attack strategy? Much as I dislike it, I know it&#8217;s inevitable. One is ill-advised to let serious allegations fester unanswered. And fair is fair; ethical journalism means both sides of the story should be told. That doesn&#8217;t mean we always have to take the media counter-attack seriously. As Shakespeare noted:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;it is a tale<br \/>\nTold by an idiot, full of sound and fury,<br \/>\nSignifying nothing.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/shakespeare.mit.edu\/macbeth\/macbeth.5.5.html\" title=\"Macbeth\">Macbeth<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What&#8217;s the cliche?
