Or ignoring the holidays, for as long as possible.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Book &amp; Movie News<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Alaska <a title=\"Frozen Ground Filming Ends in Alaska\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adn.com\/2011\/11\/26\/2190419\/alaska-ear.html\">filming has ended<\/a> on &#8220;Frozen Ground,&#8221; starring Nicolas Cage and John Cusack.<\/li>\n<li>From the you-can&#8217;t-make-this-up department: <em>As the story goes, there&#8217;s a scene [in Frozen Ground] where a moose menaces the teenage hooker-heroine who helps nail Hansen. So they rounded up a regular street moose that promptly got spooked and charged for real.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Anchorage even <a title=\"Early snow in Anchorage aids film makers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adn.com\/2011\/11\/19\/2180126\/alaska-ear.html\">cooperated with moviemakers<\/a> by delivering an early big dump of snow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Black Friday\/Monday News<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Mobile (and cyber) sales are finally <a title=\"Cyber sales take off\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/11\/29\/technology\/cyber-monday-sales-give-retailers-a-holiday-shopping-boost.html?_r=1&amp;hp=&amp;adxnnl=1&amp;adxnnlx=1322514131-liMegrjIkBPKCq1f2T3hpA&amp;gwh=89A8F6F8D6798AD2EBB4C1BA25617ED5\">taking off<\/a>, as recent IBM data for Black Friday shows.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>10.3 percent of online sales came from <a title=\"Mobile Sales: Black Friday\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/erikamorphy\/2011\/11\/25\/mobile-sales-hit-it-out-of-the-park-on-black-friday\/?partner=yahootix\">mobile shoppers<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>17 percent of all shoppers <a title=\"black friday sales driven by mobile\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/erikamorphy\/2011\/11\/25\/mobile-sales-hit-it-out-of-the-park-on-black-friday\/?partner=yahootix\">used mobile devices<\/a> to track exclusive offers and sales updates.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"iPhone leads mobile device traffic\" href=\"iPhone continued to lead all mobile device traffic at 6.58 %, followed by Android at 5.20% and iPad at 4.71%.\">iPhone continues to lead<\/a> all mobile device traffic at 6.58 %, followed by Android at 5.20% and iPad at 4.71%.<\/li>\n<li>Equally interesting, iOS-led mobile device traffic at 11.29% compared to 5.20% for Android. Or more than double.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The biggest change here is the that retailers like Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Macy&#8217;s and Apple targeted mobile devices with shopping apps, notifications and alerts. In the grand scheme of things, this tells us at least two things: First, retailers have found ways to go directly to consumers and skip Google&#8217;s intermediating engine; second, it further explains Amazon&#8217;s strategy of putting out a device that&#8217;s a pipeline to their retail experience &#8212; and which, by the way, also skips Google&#8217;s intermediating engine.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Finally, there&#8217;s this story about how <a title=\"Lies, damned lies and statistics\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/technology\/blog\/2011\/nov\/25\/apple-tablet-context-npd\">two recent market studies<\/a> leave out iPad sales in their tablet market reviews. This lets them write headlines suggesting that &#8220;a large group of consumers are looking for alternatives [to the iPad tablet].&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>But it&#8217;s not true, actually. <a title=\"Daring Fireball estimates tablet sales\" href=\"http:\/\/daringfireball.net\/2011\/11\/fun_with_numbers\">John Gruber estimates<\/a> that the iPad actually has, oh, something like 89% of the market. Which means that 11% are truly looking at alternatives &#8212; and some of them bought HP tablets at fire sale prices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few tidbits that caught my attention during the holidays.
