When Glenn Flothe and Darel Galyan interviewed Robert Hansen after his October 27, 1983, arrest, they were part of a full-court press. The cops were at his house. At his bakery. At Merrill Field, searching his airplane. Looking back on that time, Glenn Flothe had one question. \u201cAnd so, in my own mind, I’m very curious to know at what point did he realize these guys \u2014 for once \u2014 had their shit together?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, when did Robert Hansen realize anything? From Hansen’s perspective, the cops were fools, there to be tricked into false beliefs. The women of Anchorage \u2014 the sex-workers and dancers \u2014 were on the same footing. There to be tricked, deceived, taken advantage of. <\/p>\n\n\n

But just by asking that question, Flothe was led to another revelation. Here he is again: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in order for me to ask that question, I think it\u2019s obvious that I wasn\u2019t sure myself at what point he was willing to give it all up.<\/p>\nSgt. Glenn Flothe, 1984 interview with Leland E. Hale<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

One Thing to Realize <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Glenn Flothe did have at least one critical advantage. One that proved not only prescient but crucial to his eventual success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I just knew, though, from his past experience that if I kept dumping on him, dumping on him more pressure, file more charges,” that he might break. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, it was no time to take chances, not with every possible police resource pointed in the same direction. That was why they’d consulted with the FBI. They wanted to learn \u2014 and apply \u2014 best practices for confronting a serial killer. <\/p>\n\n\n

Best Practices<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

“[W]hen we [Galyan & Flothe] brought him into that room, we left him some type \u2014 some stray, usual tips \u2014 this was some of the help the FBI gave us… In the room we had his files \u2014 files with his associates written on it, and just happened to be open to a page where there\u2019s his wife\u2019s picture \u2014 written across it is \u2018Darla Hansen\u2019 and a computer print-out of all the information.”\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNext to that is his alibi witness that happens to be partially opened next to that. And the alibi witness\u2019 name and his photograph, right? Up on the wall \u2014 I\u2019ve a complete map of the Knik River area and I\u2019ve got X\u2019s on it and then circled around the entire area \u2014 around where the two bodies were found \u2014 I\u2019ve got a red circle \u2014 so you can\u2019t miss it. And Darel points to the perimeter of the circle and it says in letters, ‘Hansen identified in this area.’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Then we had stacks of files \u2014 with names of people he was very familiar with \u2014 sister-in-law, brother-in-law, whoever else.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And we also had photographs of the victims lying on the desk \u2014 blown up \u2014 I mean these were 8 x 10 glossies of his victims. So when he comes in and sits down at the desk… you know he\u2019s looking around, you know he\u2019s looking at things \u2014 but we ain\u2019t telling him nuthin\u2019. So as far as what we know \u2014 you\u2019re surrounded, and we know you\u2019re the guy.”\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Turning Point?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The pressure campaign by Galyan and Flothe was total and complete. Question after question. Questions so intense that Hansen ultimately had to wonder \u2014 where is all this going? By that point, the man had made some damning admissions. Had put himself on the Knik. Put himself on the Knik with his firearm and his brass. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And finally… he says he wants his attorney,” Flothe recalls. “[And] I says, \u2018Fine, you\u2019re under arrest for the rape and kidnapping [of Cindy Paulson].<\/p>\n\n\n\n
