This time, I&#8217;m here to finally &#8212; unequivocally &#8212; say that the Robert Hansen story has &#8220;left the building.&#8221; Yes, I still subscribe to the school of thought propounded by Maj. Walter Gilmour, AST. Ret., which has it that Robert Hansen will always be &#8212; quoting Gilmour here &#8212; &#8220;a dimple dicked little shit.&#8221; But, as writers sometimes forget &#8212; at their peril &#8212; once the book leaves your hands it belongs to the world. Count me among that forgetful lot. Somehow I missed the memo around &#8220;lore.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lelandhale.com\/butcherbaker\/images\/benedict-luft-lore-vid-screencap-copyright-NYT-aug-2026-350px.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.9641880233977191;width:358px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Illustration: Benedikt Luft for the New York Times<\/strong><br>(Courtesy NYT; copyright 2026)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Consider the following passage from a recent New York Times article, entitled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/08\/20\/magazine\/lore-language-history.html?unlocked_article_code=1.9VA.p-9F.W722veRmeNG_&amp;smid=url-share\">Lore<\/a>&#8221; (Mitch Therieau, NYT, August 20, 2026)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">\"Where 'trivia' was self-effacing, 'lore' is epic, or at least mock-epic. It gives minor factoids the feeling of magical incantations, perhaps read off forbidden scrolls from a sorcerer's library.\"<em> Mitch Therieau<\/em> <\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>And then this, from one of the several books about serial killer Robert Hansen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Robert Hansen, a baker from Alaska, hunted down his victims without mercy. He did the unthinkable, making hunting much more than a sport&#8230;&#8221; Blurb for a competing Robert Hansen title<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Now, for comparative purposes, let&#8217;s look more deeply at the Billy the Kid story. Another outlaw in the American canon, the &#8220;lore&#8221; claims Billy killed 21 men\u2014one for each year of his life. Historians note he was actually responsible for four to nine deaths, only four of which were entirely his own doing. And that&#8217;s just the start, as historian George R. Matthews starkly reveals in his book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newmexicomagazine.org\/blog\/post\/billy-the-kid\/\">Billy the Kid: The Life Behind the Legend<\/a>. Yep. This lore stuff is unavoidable. At some level, humans are stubbornly fanciful and, perhaps&#8230; Serial fabricators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lelandhale.com\/images\/hansen_house_oldharbor_book-hale-photo-copyright.png\" alt=\"lore\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Robert Hansen&#8217;s house, Muldoon, Anchorage, Alaska<\/strong><br>(copyright Leland E. Hale)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Loser Becomes Myth Boy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of Robert Hansen, this lore reveals itself across several lines of thought. The top one &#8212; the one that still drives me nuts &#8212; is the notion of Hansen as a &#8220;predator who stalked and murdered young women, turning Alaska\u2019s remote landscape into his personal hunting ground.&#8221; [See: dimple dicked little shit, above]. Quickly followed by comparisons to the noir classic, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Most_Dangerous_Game\">The Most Dangerous Game<\/a>, in which &#8220;<em>a big-game hunter is shipwrecked on a remote island and discovers that a psychotic Russian count hunts human castaways for sport.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Missing Piece<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert C. Hansen may have been psychotic. But he was not &#8212; then, or ever &#8212; a Russian count, fictional or otherwise. For his part, General Zaroff of &#8220;The Most Dangerous Game&#8221; inhabited an opulent chateau on (fictional) Ship-Trap Island. Robert Hansen inhabited a mid-century rambler in Muldoon (above). Zaroff pursued the &#8220;game&#8221; in an almost gentlemanly way, going after people he considered &#8220;worthy targets,&#8221; none more so than his would be victim, &#8220;Sanger Rainsford,&#8221; a big-game hunter from New York. Quoting an online entry about <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Most_Dangerous_Game\">The Most Dangerous Game<\/a>, we note the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">Zaroff, himself a big-game hunter, \"lures ships to his island, takes the survivors captive and&nbsp;hunts them for sport, giving them food, clothing, a knife, and a three-hour head start, using only a small-caliber pistol for himself. Any captives who can elude Zaroff, [...] and a pack of&nbsp;hunting dogs for three days are set free, though Zaroff has never lost a hunt.\"<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lelandhale.com\/images\/hansen_assault_1971-deadly-weapon.png\" alt=\"lore\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Robert Hansen @ his 1971 arrest<\/strong><br>(Assault w\/ Dangerous Weapon, courtesy Alaska State Troopers)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert Hansen&#8217;s favored targets were street prostitutes. Easy prey, considering the fact that they &#8212; alone among the women of Anchorage &#8212; were willing to get into a stranger&#8217;s car for the mere &#8220;promise&#8221; of money for sex. Usually fifty bucks or less. Given the ultimate price of this &#8220;deal,&#8221; we would be amiss to consider it anything other than a lopsided exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">If \u201clore\u201d is in part a word about treating fiction as a set of discoverable facts, it is also a word that imagines the hard facts of real life as part of a grand story. Mitch Therieau, \"Lore,\" NYT, Aug 20, 2026<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Factoids Don&#8217;t Matter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I am forced to admit that none of my <a href=\"https:\/\/lelandhale.com\/butcherbaker\/wordpress\/2026\/06\/30\/gilmour-v-hansen\/\">factual &#8220;corrections&#8221;<\/a> about Robert Hansen will ever change the equation. Lore will be lore. Myths will be myths. I can only add this: Robert C. Hansen was a f&#8217;ing loser. And, yes, the book that Gilmour and I published? It contains the same back-of-the-book claptrap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">\"But hidden beneath the veneer of mild respectability was a monster whose depraved appetites could not be sated.\" <em>From: Back Cover, Butcher, Baker: A True Account of a Serial Murderer, Walter Gilmour and Leland E.
