Robert Hansen took elaborate precautions to prevent Cindy Paulson from escaping. Like many a man before him, he wanted to sleep after having sex. Hansen’s drowsiness had more complex origins, though: because he was bipolar, he often went days without sleep. He had<\/em> to sleep. But doing so risked setting Cindy Paulson free to roam the streets with a terrible tale to tell. His solution? Chain her to a post<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\nCINDY<\/strong>: \u2018Cause there was little prongs sticking out of the wall that you could screw in. You know like when you hang a plant through the ceiling? It had one of them things and screwed it in.

\nCINDY<\/strong>: Yep. They [Anchorage Police] said they went there and they couldn\u2019t see it but I don\u2019t think they looked, \u2018cause it was there.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: It was like a thing you hang plants from…
\nCINDY<\/strong>: Uh huh.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: Um hmm.
\nCINDY<\/strong>: Like one of those things you screw in the wall.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: Was that on the post or on the wall?
\nCINDY<\/strong>: It was on the post…
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: Oh, on the post.
\nCINDY<\/strong>: Right up here (points to diagram). And then there was a bullet hole straight down, almost on the bottom. You couldn\u2019t see it if you weren\u2019t laying there.<\/p>\n

FLOTHE<\/strong>: OK. How low to the floor was the bullet hole?
\nCINDY<\/strong>: About two inches.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: OK. And how low to the floor was this…
\nCINDY<\/strong>: More than halfway up the post.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: How many feet would you say that was?
\nCINDY<\/strong>: About four feet, five feet.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: What color was that?
\nCINDY<\/strong>: Silver.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: Silver color?
\nCINDY<\/strong>: Yep.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: How did he chain you up? Describe it the best you can.
\nCINDY<\/strong>: He wrapped the chains… OK, I was handcuffed…
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: Um hmm.
\nCINDY<\/strong>: …And as he was taking the rope off, he put the chains on me. Wrapped the chains over here, four times… (points to coffee table diagram)
\nFLOTHE<\/strong> Um hmm.
\nCINDY<\/strong>: … And tied it in a way so if I would move, it would choke me.<\/p>\n

FLOTHE<\/strong>: So the chain goes around your neck. And then where did the chain go from there?
\nCINDY<\/strong>: To the wall.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: You say wall but there\u2019s a post here…
\nCINDY<\/strong>: To the post. Yeah, to the post.<\/p>\n

\nCINDY<\/strong>: Up to the hook.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: OK.
\nCINDY<\/strong>: And it was padlocked on the hook.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: Oh, it was on padlocked on the hook.
\nCINDY<\/strong>: Yep.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: What did the padlock look like?
\nCINDY<\/strong>: Like a Masterlock. Regular padlock.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: What color was it?
\nCINDY<\/strong>: Silver.<\/p>\n

FLOTHE<\/strong>: OK. How were you handcuffed? In the front or the back?
\nCINDY<\/strong>: In the front.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: OK. And did he tie your feet?
\nCINDY<\/strong>: No.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: So what you had then was a chain around your neck…
\nCINDY<\/strong>: Yep.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: …up to the post at the hook and padlocked. And you\u2019re handcuffed in front.
\nCINDY<\/strong>: Yep.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: Did you have your clothes on at that time?
\nCINDY<\/strong>: Nope.<\/p>\n

FLOTHE<\/strong>: Where were your clothes at that time?
\nCINDY<\/strong>: Sitting in the chair.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: Sitting in the chair. OK. What happened then?
\nCINDY<\/strong>: And then I stayed there for five hours (sobs).
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: Did he leave the lights on?
\nCINDY<\/strong>: The one bathroom light was on.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: What did he do?
\nCINDY<\/strong>: Slept on his couch.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: Did he say anything to you after he chained you up?
\nCINDY<\/strong>: That he was tired \u2018cause he hadn\u2019t slept in so long. And don\u2019t wake him up, \u2018cause he\u2019ll be mad.<\/p>\n

FLOTHE<\/strong>: When he was having sexual relations with you over here on the rug, prior to being chained to the post, what did he do with the gun?
\nCINDY<\/strong>: Sitting on the coffee table.
\nFLOTHE<\/strong>: And that\u2019s the coffee table over here by the rug?
\nCINDY<\/strong>: Yep. Right over by the stuffed fish.
