It was, to be sure, a case of magical thinking. The reality was that when she wasn&#8217;t tied with a rope, she was tied with a chain. And the handcuffs were ever-present. The cliche that &#8220;desperate times call for desperate measures,&#8221; comes to mind. No question, Cindy was desperate. Hell, she was ready to bean him with a pool stick.<\/p>\n<p>A pool stick? Really? At the house.<br \/>\n<strong>CINDY<\/strong>: Like what part?<br \/>\n<strong>FLOTHE<\/strong>: Did he talk to you or say anything to you when you\u2019re getting into the car in the garage?<br \/>\n<strong>CINDY<\/strong>: Yep. \u2018Lay down. Don\u2019t \u2018cause no problems, because whoever sees you in my car I\u2019m gonna have to kill them and you.\u2019<br \/>\n<strong>FLOTHE<\/strong>: You say he covered you with a blanket. What did the blanket look like?<br \/>\n<strong>CINDY<\/strong>: Like a regular Army blanket.<br \/>\n<strong>FLOTHE<\/strong>: Do you know where he got that?<br \/>\n<strong>CINDY<\/strong>: Un unh.<br \/>\n<strong>FLOTHE<\/strong>: So he had the rope in the front seat&#8230;<br \/>\n<strong>CINDY<\/strong>: Yep, and the gun too.<br \/>\n<strong>FLOTHE<\/strong>: And the gun. And you\u2019re handcuffed how? Front or back?<br \/>\n<strong>CINDY<\/strong>: In the front. Laying down in the back seat. And my shoes were on the right hand side in the back seat. And I didn\u2019t have a purse. And I had a green coat. I mean, I had a purple coat and a blue and white shirt and [end of tape]<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lelandhale.com\/butcherbaker\/images\/pool-stick.png\" alt=\"Pool Stick\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>FLOTHE<\/strong>: It\u2019s 9:17 pm. We ran out on the other tape and we just put another tape in. I was asking you the question, Cindy, did you leave anything in the house?<br \/>\n<strong>CINDY<\/strong>: Um&#8230; Just a towel that I had peed on. I was scared to pee&#8230; I wasn\u2019t too scared I was just&#8230;<br \/>\n<strong>FLOTHE<\/strong>: Why was the towel there to begin with?<br \/>\n<strong>CINDY<\/strong>: I don\u2019t know. It was laying on the couch. You see, I couldn\u2019t reach it very good. I had to reach up with my leg and my arm and stretch, \u2018cause it was choking me. But I was gonna hit him with a pool stick. But then I figured if I killed him, I would be left for dead. And if I didn\u2019t kill him, he would kill me.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lelandhale.com\/butcherbaker\/images\/hansen-pool-table-den.png\" alt=\"Pool Stick -- Pool Table\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Pool Table in Hansen&#8217;s Den<\/strong> (courtesy Alaska State Troopers)<\/p>\n<p><strong>FLOTHE<\/strong>: Where was the pool stick?<br \/>\n<strong>CINDY<\/strong>: Laying on the pool table. (sniffles)<br \/>\n<strong>FLOTHE<\/strong>: OK.<br \/>\n[pause]<br \/>\n<strong>FLOTHE<\/strong>: Did he have a holster with that gun?<br \/>\n<strong>CINDY<\/strong>: No, he didn\u2019t.<br \/>\n<strong>FLOTHE<\/strong>: Did you see any other guns at any time?<br \/>\n<strong>CINDY<\/strong>: No, I did not.<br \/>\n<strong>FLOTHE<\/strong>: So there was a rope in the front seat, the gun was in the front seat and you\u2019re in the back seat.<br \/>\n<strong>CINDY<\/strong>: Yep. Laying down.<br \/>\n<strong>FLOTHE<\/strong>: Laying down. Now when you\u2019re at the airport&#8230; Oh, you mentioned the airplane seat&#8230; Now, when does that come in?<br \/>\n<strong>CINDY<\/strong>: OK. That was, see&#8230; I was chained downstairs when he was getting everything ready in the car. OK. And see what he did, I think, is put that in the trunk.<br \/>\n<strong>FLOTHE<\/strong>: \u2018Cause it was in the back seat when he picked you up.<br \/>\n<strong>CINDY<\/strong>: Uh huh. And it wasn\u2019t in there when I laid down.<br \/>\n<strong>FLOTHE<\/strong>: When you left the house, do you remember whether or not that car was still in the driveway?<br \/>\n<strong>CINDY<\/strong>: No, I didn\u2019t even see. I was laying down.<br \/>\n<strong>FLOTHE<\/strong>: So you don\u2019t know if it was there or not?<br \/>\n<strong>CINDY<\/strong>: No. But I know it was there when we came there.<br \/>\n<strong>FLOTHE<\/strong>: At any time you were in the house did you hear any noises or sounds that&#8230;<br \/>\n<strong>CINDY<\/strong>: It sounded like there could have been other people there, but I don\u2019t really&#8230; I\u2019m not for sure. Could have just been the dogs.<br \/>\n<strong>FLOTHE<\/strong>: What makes you think there might have been somebody there?<br \/>\n<strong>CINDY<\/strong>: \u2018Cause I kept hearing walking around and all this goofy stuff.
