And So Is Butcher, Baker
My newest book, Kill Brother, Kill Sister, is of course my latest love — because it’s my most recent book. Also because, like many a parent, I love all my books (they’re my babies). Each one is special and unique in its own, special way. Still, I wouldn’t be here with three Alaska-based true-crime books without Butcher, Baker. So… Please scroll down and grab the latest deal from my publisher. It’s still a WINNER!
Where Have I Been?
When Kill Brother, Kill Sister hit bookstores in October, 2025… I went to Alaska… For Alaska Book Week. It was a great opportunity to meet new (and existing) readers… Plus we still — always — love Alaska! So… Promo Time!
Of course, there’s always more… And in my case, there was a bit of Alaska catch-up. Not just my fellow authors (always the best part), but gathering extended on-the-ground tidbits about Kill Brother, Kill Sister. You see, that book was started during… COVID. Which means, I was not able to travel to Alaska during its gestation. Entry to Alaska was severely limited. So, I concentrated on other things. Like digging deep into the archives and writing the best damn book!
BUT… With my October 2025 trip there was a chance to grab some of the photos (and video) I’d been missing. Below is an example. Many thanks to the legal admin who guided me to an empty office in the Australaska Building with the perfect view. Also: Tons of thanks to Doug Pope who, early on, gave me a first-hand account of the car bombing that took Muriel Pfeil’s life.

Doug Pope re: Sept 30, 1976: [I was] sitting in a chair – a swivel chair – with my feet propped on the window sill or the radiator beneath the window sill. And I was on the phone... I heard this WHOOMPH more than a whoomp. I just kinda turned my gaze because my window overlooked the parking lot that Muriel Pfeil’s car was in.
I saw the hood of the car going up like – when I was a kid we used to put firecrackers in a lead pipe and drop a can into them. And the firecracker would go off and shoot the can out. And it reminded me of that.
Here was this hood going up in the air, it must have gone five or six stories in the air, because I just kept watching it, and it was kind of slowly rotating and then it reached its peak and then it came down. And then I looked out – there was some -- I can’t remember – there was a woman down at the car. People were there already. At least one. So I ran out to see what I could do. Or if there’s anything.
Podcasts? You Gotta Be Kidding!
So there I was, in Alaska, in my element… And everyone kept telling me… “You gotta start doing podcasts.” Honestly, that’s a side road I never thought I’d travel. And guess what… It’s been a… transition. After many decades as a professional writer — you know, thinking, researching, rough drafts, edited drafts, final drafts — this whole business of “talking to myself” took on an entirely new meaning. In part because — though I enjoy public speaking — the podcast audience is one I cannot see “Live and Direct” (to quote Israel “Iz” Kamakawiwo’ole). So… Yes I do have product in the pipeline (didn’t I already make that promise?). That’s the good news. The bad news? I’m slow. Really, really slow. It ain’t ready yet. Yes… I’m getting there and should have something very soon. Promise.
