Hi! I’m Leland E Hale.
A native Seattleite, I have rain permanently trapped between my toes. I blame my love of travel on that first airplane ride, at six months. Hitched across the country (and back) at age 21. Think Socrates is way cooler than Aristotle, even if he went down a little harder. Have a secret soundtrack for my latest book. I’m certain that the best first line for any book ever is from “The Stranger,” by Albert Camus.
My best-known work is Butcher, Baker, a true crime book about Alaska serial killer Robert Hansen. That book influenced a movie about Robert Hansen, “The Frozen Ground,” starring Nicolas Cage and John Cusack.
My latest work, What Happened in Craig, is a true crime book about a mass murder in a small fishing village in Southeast Alaska. That crime remains, to this day, Alaska’s worst unsolved mass murder. Using extensive archival research, this work presents details previously unknown to the public.
