Thoughts On Editing

Open Road Sale

This has been one of those super busy weeks. My email delivered a note from my publisher. Your new book is ready for editing. For some authors, I suppose that’s a scary phrase, centered on a scary word. Editing. It’s as if to say — at least imply — that all that hard work was for naught. Changes, I say, changes are required. What do you mean, changes? I slaved over every single word!

Not Me, Nope

Yes, the “big edit” promises to be a slog. There will be small changes that you have to decide are worth fighting for (usually not). Maybe some Big Changes that reveal a new vision, unseen by the omniscient author. Yes, those. Definitely take those. The truth is, every writer NEEDS an editor. Because editing is where good gets to great. Or hopes to. We so easily get caught up in our own narratives. We get on a roll. Sometimes we take detours that… Well, they lead nowhere.

The editor’s job — the great ones, at least — is to see your work in a larger light. To see not just the typos but the “wrong-os.” AND most importantly, to suss out the main thread, the one the author started with, the one the author discovered along the way. Stay on the path, the editor says. Get back on the path. And, oh by the way, let’s not get caught in loose language, careless thoughts, unsupported assertions. Because, of course, this is true-crime. Emphasis on true.

Now, of course, some of you are asking… What’s it about? At the moment, I can only say it’s about 250 pages. And that it will be out sooner than later.

Another Reminder

And while we’re at it, I want to take the opportunity to remind you of the series, Mind of a Monster: The Butcher, Baker, which premiered January 9th on all podcasting platforms, including Google, Spotify and Apple podcasts. In case you haven’t heard, Cindy Paulson — one of the few women who escaped Robert Hansen’s deadly wrath — is featured in Episode 7. As always, the great Dr. Michelle Ward is the host. And, yours truly makes an appearance as well.
