Robert Hansen had a sister, eight years his junior. Can you imagine growing up with a brother who evolves into a serial killer? Alice Marie Hansen knew all too well the road her older brother had traveled. In critical ways, she endeavored to be the polar opposite.
Bob followed his father — kicking and screaming — into the bakery business. Alice was one of the top students at Walker High School in Minnesota, Class of 1965. Yes, the family moved there to avoid the shame Bob visited upon them by burning the Pocahontas school bus barn. Alice was also Secretary of her class. Her motto: “It’s useless to send armies against ideas.“

She didn’t stop there. In 1975, Alice was awarded a Ph.D. from Washington State University in Pullman, WA. Her dissertation topic? Progesterone and luteinizing hormone levels in the serum of dogs during the estrous cycle. Try saying that twice, real fast.
