Our Home & Native Land
My grandfather was a Canadian, born in Victoria. My wife is Canadian (born in Calgary, Alberta) and now a U.S. citizen too. So needless to say, it comes as a pleasant surprise to learn that my publisher is putting on a ONE-WEEK Butcher, Baker special – just for Canada.
Putting this in the context of Robert Hansen, our infamous Butcher, Baker, it’s worth noting that Canada is a lot closer to Alaska than any U.S. state. As far as the U.S. goes, Seattle, Washington, has a long history with Alaska, dating back to the Gold Rush. Bellingham, meanwhile, has the honor of being the southernmost stop for the Alaska Marine Highway system. That said, Prince Rupert, B.C. has long been an important stop along the Marine Highway. And it’s a LOT closer.
Because Prince Rupert is in… Canada. It’s that place circled in red (below). As you can see, it’s just a hiccup away from Ketchikan, Gateway to Alaska. So, yes, Canada is in the Butcher, Baker universe, whether it likes it or not.

The Larger Map
The looming question, perhaps, is whether Robert Hansen ever committed any crimes in Canada. Not just murder, but… Yeah, let’s put murder in there, too. The short answer is: there is no evidence that Robert Hansen committed any crimes in Canada. He was too busy in Anchorage.
Part of that discrepancy is explained by the vast territory to be traversed. Again, let’s look at an Alaska Marine Highway map for reference. (Not that Hansen would be taking a boat. He had an airplane.) Yes, he could fly. Apparently, he didn’t. Fly to Canada to commit crimes, that is. It’s not a trivial journey by small plane, so why bother?
That said, Robert C. Hansen, Butcher, Baker, was committing major crimes right in your backyard, Canada!
