April Showers Sale

The word is Spring. It’s upon us once again and, with that, another Butcher, Baker promotion. In Alaska, April brings the thaw. Brings not only buds on the trees, but melting of the snow. An amazing time of year that often reveals what lies beneath that snow. Such was the case with Robert Hansen.

Spring along the Knik River is can be fulsome and beautiful. But in 1984, it also brought sorrow. The sorrow of bodies that covered a five mile stretch of that most beautiful of rivers. Eleven bodies. At least eleven. This was Robert Hansen’s “killing fields.” He revisited them year after year.

I do not intend to dwell on these things. Rather, I am holding a moment of quiet contemplation. Some of these women are still unidentified. This Spring, as life renews itself all around us, let’s hope that additional women are identified. Let’s hope more families can gather a glimpse of closure. Let Butcher, Baker be a book that keeps us on our collective toes.
